Children need to 'be ready' to make a confident, happy and successful start to school.

What does this mean?

It is VITAL for children to have well-developed social, emotional, language and communication skills to support them in starting school, achieving success and finding their way through the early years of schooling.

What are these skills?

Important social and emotional skills include -
  • confidence, persistence, independence, organisation, resilience
  • getting-along, taking turns, sharing
  • showing respect and care for others
  • having-a-go (being a risk-taker), solving problems, making decisions

What is the best way to learn these skills?

Young children learn best when -
  • learning is fun, active and hands-on
  • they wonder, question, reflect and communicate
  • learning is meaningful and developmentally appropriate
  • expectations are high but realistic
  • language and communication is a focus (songs, rhymes, picture books)
  • they feel safe (physically and emotionally)
  • important 'school readiness' skills are explicitly taught

About the classes

Exclusive to Set 4 School,
these Early Learning Classes have been developed and are taught by Heidi Smith, a registered, qualified and highly experienced teacher.
To maximise each child’s learning there are only six children per class. This enables Heidi to get to know and work individually with each child and family.  Small classes also allow Heidi to provide extra support and/or extension when necessary for each child and regular feedback, advice and encouragement for all families.
The Set 4 School classroom is welcoming, safe, air-conditioned & well-resourced.
